The floorboard (also called the bottom board) is the structure that supports the full weight of the hive and incorporates the entrance through which bees come and go. There are a few different types of bottom boards available, but they are either a solid bottom board or screened bottom board.

This screened bottom board allow better ventilation for the hot Australian climate so the bees can remain cooler for longer.

An additional feature of the meshed bottom board is its useful when assessing whether mites such as the black hive-beetle are a problem. This is where bees chase the mites between the grill of the mesh and down onto the removable cleaning board.
